How do you mount a wind generator / turbine on a home-built pole / tower?

Hi I notice the cost of a tower for a wind generator is quite expensive. If purchasing a low-watt Wind Generator (a 400 or 900 rating) that can be assembled on your own pole / tower, how do you go about making that pole?? Can it be done with PVC pipe? Metal pipe? Wood? And what do you think about how high it should be placed? 20 feet up on a wooden beam, no. The lower it is the easier it would be to erect it, take it down, and less chance of tipping over without a guy wire. But with less wind production =/. What do you suggest? Cost is $1,900 for a 900-watt turbine and $540 for a 30-foot tower. I’d prefer saving that $500 and widdling my own 8 foot pole … but I dont want anybody walking into the darn thing either!

Wow. That’s quite a project. I might suggest you drive around in the country and look for an old steel windmill frame like some of the older farms once used. I am thinking it would be about 30-40 feet high. Then you’ll have to figure out a way to purchase it, load it and transport it to your site. Be sure to set in in deep concrete and securly bolt it down. You may need to rent a crane or at least a telescopic boom lift with a long reach. At the top of the steel frame you’ll need to weld extra support to support the heavy turbine. It will also need to be mounted dead center to the top. Of course it will have to swivel 360 degrees so I suggest you purchase some type of pipe to swivel around the shaft…better if it has ball bearings inside of it with sealed grease serts. You may have to weld up some kind of steel frame “cage” for the turbine to sit inside of. Then you’ll also have to figure out some kind of tail vane for it so that it could always point into the wind.

This is definately NOTTT a weekender project for the common “garage mechanic”. I used to work for a company in Grand Forks, ND that makes HUGE wind turbines with 25 foot long blades made of fiberglass. These turbines are mounted by a team of engineers using high tech equipment and large cranes. You MAY want to “reconsider” the limitations of your technical abilities and skills and opt for some “professional” assistance here. It would be a tragedy to see it mounted improperly and get damaged or destroyed after just a few days or few hours of use. I’ve seen knowledgeable, college educated people make some simple errors in judgement or planning and get hurt or damage some veryyyy expensive equipment.
AT the very least pay a visit to other turbine generator dealerships and discuss this problem with them. The may have mounting kits and other accessory parts to aid in this project.
There may also be other useful information by doing a Google search for Wind Turbine towers???
