Wind Farm Size Cut Back
Wind Farm Size Cut Back
The original wind farm in Lake Michigan proposed by Harald Dirdal, products manager for Havgul Clean Energy, will be cut back to a fewer number of turbines and moved out in Lake Michigan at least four miles. They decided to change their plans after a meeting with representatives of local governments. Products manager Harald Dirdal said that after private and public meetings he decided that the original plans are just too big.
After holding three public meetings the developers said they have received a lot feed back about the proposed wind farm. Dirbal said the company has received as much positive feedback as negative feedback. As of now Pentwater Village Council and Pentwater Township Board have passed resolutions opposing the project. Product manager, Dirbal, said it is up to the Oceana County Board of Commissioners to decide what weight those resolutions will have in the county boards decision about the plans. Oceana County Commission Chair Larry VanSickle has said they are getting a lot correspondence on the matter and most of it does not support the wind towers because of the visual effects.
The Commissioners have said that if they are looking for support the company needs to keep the jobs locally. Oceana Commissioner Denny Powers said that in a recent national news report that of the $2 billion of federal stimulus money set aside for wind energy development 80 percent of it went to foreign manufacturers. That doesn’t say too much about our federal government. I haven’t said this before, but I am a Pentwater resident and I don’t want my property values to go down or anything that will interfere with our sports fishing just so a foreign company can make money. Most of the money that the Department of Natural resources used to make Lake Michigan a fishing meca came from the revenue of fishing and hunting licenses and also from taxes on hunting and fishing equipment. This is money spent by sportsmen and I wouldn’t want this side of the state degraded just so foreign companies can profit.

As one gentleman commented, do the big wind developing companies wanted us to take all of the risk with a possible decline in property values, higher electric rates and the jobs they promise. Maybe they are looking to make billions in subsidies and tax incentives. Will they guarantee that our property values will not go down and that there will be good paying long-term jobs after the wind farms are built. And also, what about the affects on fishing, hunting, tourism and health.
Will the cost of these green energy plans to save the planet be worth the damage we do to the Great Lakes and neighboring lands. Maybe we are going to exchange cleaning up our air for degrading and contaminating our fresh waters.
