The size of the rotor in comparison to the size of the blades will determine the efficiency of your homemade wind turbine. To keep this simple just remember that if you have a large radius on your rotor then it will be harder to get a full revolution therefore your turbine blades need to be bigger or there needs to be more of them. In a high wind area by all means make a large rotor with big turbine blades but in a small wind area it is better to make a smaller rotor with more than 3 blades. It is better to stick to this simple ratio.

So finally you want your homemade wind turbine to generate renewable energy and that leads to a generator. You can use any small generator be it from an electrical appliance such as a washing machine or buy one from your local hardware store. Talk to the hardware store owner and tell them what you will be using it for and they will give you what you need. The generator is attached to the rotor and the action of the rotor turning creates energy through the generator which can be linked to an electrical appliance or storage battery.
