How do I build a model windmill that generates electricity?
It is for a Grade 10 Science assignment, we are basically going to hold a hand held fan up to the windmill that it connected to a generator and light bulb and we have to get the bulb to light up and see how it works. It only has to be a about a foot or so high. We have been given a very light (as in not heavy) wood to build the windmill. I would like some instructions and how I would go about connecting the generator etc. and why the design of the blades etc. would be good. If you need more information just tell me what you need. Thanks a lot it would be a great help, I’m not going to copy it exactly I just need an idea of what I have to do.
Find a little dc electric motor (RadioShack or from a toy car or whatever) to use as the generator. You can mount it with rubber bands. The blade is tricky. It has to be big enough but not sharp or dangerous. The best way I found was to get a large wine bottle cork to use as a hub for your blades. Ask an adult or silly person to put little slices in it with a box cutter. These should be about 15 degrees apart and run the length of the cork but not straight down (you need an angle so the blades catch the wind). Then you can get some plastic (soda bottles are great) and cut the individual blades with scissors. Make sure they are all the same. They need to have a slight curve. Put it all together and mount on the motor’s shaft by drilling a little pilot hole.. This should be able to generate a little power.

LEDs are much better than bulbs but unlike simple bulbs you need to get the current flowing in the right direction for them to work.
